My dad bundled us into the station wagon and drove away with his eyes on the rear-view mirror. When we got back to the parking lot, two black limousines were parked near our car. Growing up in Santa Barbara, California, I thought San Francisco was the most exotic place in California. It’s no accident that my novel The Dirty Secrets Club is set in the city.
